Austrians also win on smaller hills

opprettet på: 05.03.2012 15:13 / km

From the largest to a normal hill: That was the motto of the team competition in Lahti. After the ski flying World Championships on the world's largest hill in Vikersund, the team event in Lahti was held on the normal hill, because there it's easier to carry out a fair competition under the difficult wind conditions than on the large hill..

"You have to get used to the smaller hill again. The trial round was not that good either, but then it went pretty well. It was not that bad", said German Richard Freitag. His teammate Severin Freund agreed: "It looks really small from up there. But when you made the first jump, Vikersund is already far away again."

Austrians the best - Freitag and Freund strong

The victory went to Austria - no matter if the hill is big or small. A week ago in Vikersund they won Gold with the team, in Lahti they also won on the HS 97 hill. It was a clear win for Thomas Morgenstern, Gregor Schlierenzauer, Martin Koch and Andreas Kofler, the first victory after three second places in the World Cup. "It was difficult to move from the hill in Vikersund to this hill, but also like to jump on small hills. I think we showed a good performance today. It's not easy to go into a competition always being the favorite and the wind conditions were difficult. I'm satisfied", said Thomas Morgenstern.

With 892.1 points, Austria won ahead of Germany, just like in Vikersund. The best of the Germans was Richard Freitag, but also Freund, Andreas Wank and Maximilian Mechler showed a good performance, the Germans are on the right track and finished second with 878.1 points.

Poland: Comeback on the podium

Once again the Polish jumpers, with the two 17-year-old youngsters Klemens Muranka and Aleksander Zniszcol on their team, landed on the podium. Also Maciej Kot is only 21 years old. Kamil Stoch is the veteran of the team. Poland was third, only 0.6 points behind Germany. "The third place was a surprise for us. Our young jumpers did a very good job and we are really happy", said Kamil Stoch.

Tepes sets hill record

Slovenia can thank especially Jurij Tepes for their fifth place. The 23-year-old landed after 101 m and improved the old hill record of Janne Ahonen by 2.5 m.

Nominating 20-year-old Ilmir Hazetdinov, who never competed in the World Cup so far, proved to be a good decision for the Russian team. The coaches Richard Schallert and Alexander Arefiev decided that the young athlete from Ufa shall compete in Lahti after his eighth place at the COC in Wisla. Hazetdinov jumped well and might have deserved more chances in the future. Russia finished seventh, behind Japan.

The Norwegians had some problems with the small hill, especially their young athletes. Vegard Haukoe Sklett fell in the first round after the landing and landed already after 85.5 m in the final. Also Rune Velta could not show a convincing performance - Norway finished fourth, like in Vikersund.

Larinto is back - Finland only eighth

The Finns good not show an outstanding performance in front of their home crowd, but the competition was okay for them. Especially positive was the comeback of Ville Larinto, who participated in the World Cup again after his two serious knee injuries. His jumps were not great yet, but he was competitive. Good for Finland. His team came in only eighth - that's of course a disappointment.

The young team from Estonia came to learn and finished tenth. Surprisingly also the Czech Republic could not qualify for the final round, although the competed with their best team. But Roman Koudelka was the only one who good show a good performance. They seem to have problems with adjusting to the small hill after Vikersund.
