Kranjec is the "King of Ski Flying"

opprettet på: 02.03.2012 12:29 / km

In an incredibly exciting and dramatic final super ski flyer Robert Kranjec crowned himself as World Champion! At age 30 the winner of the event in Bad Mitterndorf in January captured the title at the World Championships in Vikersund. Kranjec is the first Slovenian ski flying World Champion in history.

And what an exciting competition: The wind changed, and many athletes could not show long jumps under tailwind conditions. But it was a great show of the world's best. Kranjec landed after 244. And he could even show a good landing. This earned him 408.7 points and the Gold medal! A week after the victory in the team competition in Oberstdorf Kranjec was on top again.

Vikersund on fire after Velta's jump

Silver went to Norwegian youngster Rune Velta, who was in the lead after the first round, remained cool in the final and jumped on 234.5 m. He reached a total of 405.7 points and won his first international medal. The crowd in Vikersund was on fire. 27 000 fans celebrated the second place like a victory.

Martin Koch dominated the training and also showed a long jump in the first round. In the final he flew on 243 m, Gold was almost his, but the he fell. He came in "only" third. At least Koch could win a medal with his 386.2 points. But still he seemed shocked. His dream of Gold shattered in the outrun of the Vikersundbakken.

Freund finished fourth

Severin Freund, who was in the lead at the time of the cancellation on Friday, finished firth with 372.6 points. Bad luck for the German who showed two really good jumps. The fifth place went to Daiki Ito, who lost the chance to win a medal in the first round. Austrian Andreas Kofler was sixth, local hero Anders Bardal was seventh.

It was not easy for the jumpers, some felt they had no chance due to the conditions, like Germany's Andreas Wank who was extremely angry after his first jump. "These are World Championships. And then you have such a lottery, that's not the way it should be", he said. In the final he could show a good jump and finished 17th.

Ammann and Schlierenzauer not among the best

And so he came in ahead of Gregor Schlierenzauer. He didn't show a good jump and had not the best conditions and so the World Champion of 2008 was only 18th. Simon Ammann of Switzerland shared a similar fate. The defending champion was 14th.

The competition remained difficult, also in the final. The jury played it safe because of the changing conditions. And so some athletes could not jump as far as they wanted. Like for example Norwegian ski flying icon Bjoern Einar Romoeren, who already landed after 158.5 m. This was the 29th place for the former world record holder.

The team competition will take place on Sunday and it seems to be a duel between Norway and Austria, but also Slovenia and Germany might have a chance.
