After many spectacular jumps and lots of waiting the jury decided to cancel the first competition round at 7:45 pm CET - with only five jumpers left. It was just too windy at the Vikersundbakken. When Martin Koch, who dominated the training, was ready to jump, it was not possible anymore.
It was a difficult start for the ski flying World Championships in Vikersund. Although the fans at the world's largest hill got to see awesome jumps. Rune Velta, for example, jumped on 234 m, or Denis Kornilov on 232 m, a new Russian national record. But these jumps do not count now that the round was cancelled. Everything starts over new on Saturday.
That's very bad news for Severin Freund of Germany, because he was in the lead at the time of the cancellation with a jump on 220.5 m ahead of Velta and his teammate Maximilian Mechler.
The results of Severin Freund »
"If the wind blows right in your face when you're waiting for your jump you think it would be better if they won't give you the green light. It was clear that it would be difficult. You don't have to make the mistake to jump with too much power", said Freund.
Schlierenzauer, Stoch and Ammann with too much headwind
Gregor Schlierenzauer had so much headwind that he lost too much speed. "When you have 3.5 m headwind at the take-off then the skis are pushed towards the body and you lose speed. The jump was okay", he told.
It was even worse for Kamil Stoch. The Pole could avoid a serious fall but landed already after 152.5 m. Good for Stoch that the jury cancelled today's results.
Ammann: "Never had such a braking effect"
But the decision was right. Because: "Never in my career have I experienced such a braking effect. You can really question the fairness", said Simon Ammann, who jumped on 196 m.
New start time: Saturday, 3:00 pm CET
And so the competition will start on Saturday now. The weather forecast is not much better, but everyone is optimistic that the one or the other round will be possible. The first round was now scheduled for Saturday afternoon, 3:00 pm CET.
