Germany dominates team competition

opprettet på: 11.03.2013 11:19 / km

The German team dominated Saturday’s team competition in Lahti and won with a total of 1079.5 points. The second place went to Norway, followed by Poland.

Stable wind conditions, like it's not often the case at the World Cup in Lahti, made it possible for the German team to show its full potential. With his 283.9 points and jumps on 125.5 m and 131 m Severin Freund would have won an individual competition today. Also Richard Freitag (124 m and 123.5 m), Michael Neumayer (120.5 m and 125.5 m) and Andreas Wank (117.5 m and 126.5 m) showed six strong jumps, that earned their team a total of 1079.5 points.

"The whole team likes this hill very much and we know we can jump very well in Lahti. We already won in Kuusamo this winter and we like the Finnish hills very much because you really have take off at the table here and we can do that", said Freund.

Fight of Norway and Poland

Today, Norway was better and could come in second with its score of 1038.8 points. Rune Velta, Andreas Stjernen, Anders Jacobsen and Anders Bardal showed seven good jumps and could have fought for the win, if not the one weaker effort of Velta. "We already forgot about the World Championships. Today were we a bit closer, but we were still quite a lot of points behind the winner", said Velta, who replaced Tom Hilde on the team.

For the third time in a row Poland could achieve a podium finish in Lahti. The team of head coach Lukasz Kruczek scored 1036.2 points and missed the second place by only 2.6 points. All four Polish athletes – Maciej Kot, Piotr Zyla, Krzysztof Mietus and Kamil Stoch - did well at the Salpausselka-hill. With his jumps on 121.5 m and 124 m Stoch would have finished second in an individual event, behind Severin Freund of Germany. "This is another big success for our team after we could win the first medal at World Championships in history", told Maciej Kot.

Disappointment for the Austrian team

Austria could not finish on the podium in Lahti. The team of Alexander Pointner, with Wolfgang Loitzl, Stefan Kraft, Manuel Fettner and Gregor Schlierenzauer, scored 1029.2 points. The Gold medalists of the WSC will be disappointed with their result and will be motivated for the last team competition of this winter in Planica.

With the fifth place Japan repeated its result from last week’s competition in Predazzo. “Air Nippon” with Junshiro Kobayashi, Noriaki Kasai, Daiki Ito and Taku Takeuchi could keep its consistent shape.

Slovenia (Jurij Tepes, Jaka Hvala, Peter Prevc, Robert Kranjec) completed the Top 6 today. Three members of the team could not keep up with the impressive performance of Peter Prevc who presented himself in a strong shape with jumps on 122.5 m and 130 m and will be one of the top contestants for the podium on Sunday.

The Czech Republic came in seventh. The team of head coach David Jiroutek, consisting of Lukas Hlava, Roman Koudelka, Jakub Janda and Jan Matura had a total score of 926.6 points.

Hosts in the second round

The Finnish team came in eighth in the home competition with 862.1 points. Olli Muotka, Ville Larinto, Mika Kulmala and Lauri Asikainen could do better in front of their home crowd than the Finns did in Predazzo.

The Italian team finished ninth. Roberto Dellasega, Andrea Morassi, Davide Bresadola and Sebastian Colloredo scored 406.4 points and missed the final round by only one meter. The tenth place went to Russia. The Russian team took part in the competition with only three jumpers, because Dimitry Vassiliev could not compete due to health problems. Denis Kornilov, Alexey Romashov and Ilja Rosliakov scored 334.6 points.
