Premiere in Val di Fiemme, Italy: The first ever mixed team competition was held at WSC and the team of Japan won the first ever World Championship title in this new format. Yuki Ito, Daiki Ito, Sara Takanashi and Taku Takeuchi took the Gold in an exciting competition ahead of Austria and Germany.
It was not easy to name a clear favorite before this competition. After the two individual competitions the Austrians, with the medalists Gregor Schlierenzauer and Jacqueline Seifriedsberger and Thomas Morgenstern and Chiara Hoelzl, who are also in a good shape, could be considered the top contestants. But also the German team had to be reckoned with, Severin Freund and Richard Freitag achieved good results at the World Championships as fourth and sixth. And while Carina Vogt was the best German this season, Ulrike Graessler is back in a good shape right on time for the Championships. After Slovenia won the team competitions at the Junior World Championships and the bronze medal of Peter Prevc yesterday, the Slovenes were also among the favorites. But on this hill in Predazzo, the women couldn't do as well as they had wished so far.
But at the end it was the team of Japan, that stood on top of the podium. After Sara Takanashi won silver in the individual competition a few days ago, she now also won Gold together with her teammates. With a total of 1011.0 points - Yuki Ito (90 m and 91.5 m), Daiki Ito (100 m and 100 m), Sara Takanashi (101.5 m and the longest jump of the day on 106.5 m) and Taku Takeuchi (100.5 m and 101.5 m) - Japan won the first ever mixed team title at World Championships, 24.3 points ahead of the second-placed team of Austria.
The Austrians were third after the first round and won Silver at the end with a total of 968.7 points. Chiara Hoelzl (92.5 m and 98.5 m), who is only 15-years-old and won her first medal at WSC, showed a strong performance, just like her teammates Thomas Morgenstern (99.5 m and 100 m), Jacqueline Seifriedsberger (97.5 m and 99.5 m) and Gregor Schlierenzauer (99 m and 100 m). "I'm very satisfied with how the first week of the WSC went. It's something special to win two medals in two competitions. It's a very good feeling when you are on the podium and also know that there is still room for improvement and the jumps weren't perfect. Now I'm looking forward to the competitions on the large hill. All I can say about Chiara is: If you take part at World Championships for the first time at age 15, then everything is new. Now we go to Cavalese and get our medals, it will be great", said Gregor Schlierenzauer, who won his second silver medal in the second competition at these Championships.
After missing the podium twice, bronze for Germany
Also the German team was happy: After Severin Freund and Carina Vogt closely missed the podium in the individual competitions, they now came in third and won the bronze medal. Ulrike Graessler (96.5 m and 97 m), Richard Freitag (102.5 m and 97 m), Carina Vogt (95.5 m and 98 m) and Severin Freund (96.5 m and 99.5 m) were just as relieved and happy as their coaches. "We had a close team today. We were able to show consistent jump and that was decisive for the result", Carina Vogt said after the competitions. Her teammate Severin Freund added: "It feels good now, after it was so close yesterday. I would have been tough to be fourth again today. I had no idea how the other teams did when I made my last jump. It's better for me, if I don't know that."
The places four to eight went to the teams of Norway, with Maren Lundby, Tom Hilde, Anette Sagen and World Champion Anders Bardal, France (Lea Lemare, Ronan Lamy Chappuis, Coline Mattel and Vincent Descombes Sevoie), USA (Jessica Jerome, Peter Frenette, Sarah Hendrickson, Anders Johnson), Italy (Elena Runggaldier, Andrea Morassi, Evelyn Insam, Sebastian Colloredo) and Slovenia (Ursa Bogataj, Jaka Hvala, Spela Rogelj, Peter Prevc). The teams of Russia and the Czech Republic failed to make the cut for the final round.
Hendrickson and Takeuchi the best
The local heroes of Italy were seventh in front of their home crowd, Slovenia, with many strong jumpers, came in only eighth. Also in this competition, the spectators saw a duel between Sara Takanashi and Sarah Hendrickson, because alsos the US American and newly crowned World Champion showed an impressive performance with 99 m and 104 m. The best in a men's individual ranking was Taku Takeuchi of Japan.
