Slovenia dominates team competition

opprettet på: 11.02.2013 10:18 / km

The winning streak of the Slovenian jumpers continues. With a victory in the team competition in Willingen the Slovenes lived up to their role as the top ski jumping team and followed up on their success in Zakopane. The athletes around ski flying World Champion Robert Kranjec are now the favorites for the overall title at the FIS Team Tour 2013.

At the end the team of head coach Goran Janus scored a total of 990.4 points for the eight jumps of junior World Champion Jaka Hvala (140 m and 127 m), Jurij Tepes (140 m and 132 m), Peter Prevc (143 m and 143 m) and Robert Kranjec (139.5 m and 132.5 m). 17.9 points ahead of the second-placed team of Norway and the Germans. Best of the Slovenian team was Peter Prevc who would have won an individual competition with a total of 272.7 points.

"I think the key to this success was our consistency - all of us jumped well and nobody made a mistake. Right now we don't think about the World Championships yet. We take one competition after the other to not put too much pressure on ourselves. Four teams are very strong right now and so nothing is decided yet. Tomorrow all of us can be in the Top 20, or maybe even better. Our team is very strong and we support each other. One for all and all for one", Jurij Tepes said about the strength of the Slovenian team.

Rune Velta (127.5 m and 129.5 m), who replaced the sick Andreas Stjernen on the team, Tom Hilde (136.5 m and 130 m), Anders Bardal (142.5 m and 137 m) and Anders Jacobsen (138 m and 140 m) reached a total of 972.5 m for Norway.

Norwegians back on top

"We are pretty satisfied with today's competition. In the last event in Zakopane we were seventh, today we did a good job and showed that we can be better than that. Slovenia was very strong, we had no chance. It looks good for tomorrow. We have a strong team right now and the new guys are jumping better and better. I just want to show good jumps and don't care that much about the result. The World Championships will be more important", Tom Hilde told after the competition.

Anders Bardal and Anders Jacobsen were the best athletes of the team of head coach Alex Stoeckl. Both showed that they are definitely candidates for the win in Sunday's individual competition in Willingen.

More than 13 000 enthusiastic fans saw a fighting German team that was then awarded with the third place. The 963.7 points were earned by Michael Neumayer (139.5 m and 133.5 m), Richard Freitag (136.5 and 133 m), Andreas Wellinger (128.5 m and 130 m) and Severin Freund (138.5 m and 137.5 m).

"Our goal was to be on the podium and we achieved that. We showed a good performance today, Slovenia was really strong and they deserved this win. Norway was just a bit better than us. Gregor Schlierenzauer is in an outstanding shape again, who's not reckoning with him tomorrow knows nothing about ski jumping. We have seven Germans in the competition tomorrow and I hope that all of us qualify for the final round and achieve good results. I don't want to make any predictions, but one German will be on the podium", Michael Neumayer said.

Austrians miss the podium

The Austrian jumpers, who were used to being successful in team competitions, came in only fourth, despite an extremely strong performance of Gregor Schlierenzauer (second in an individual ranking). Schlierenzauer, Stefan Kraft, Wolfgang Loitzl and Martin Koch reached 958.6 points, not enough to be on the podium.

The Polish team of head coach Lukasz Kruczek finished fifth. 909.1 points for Dawid Kubacki (138 m and 132 m), Kamil Stoch (139.5 m and 140 m), Piotr Zyla and Krzystof Mietus. They were followed by the Japanese, who showed some improvement after their competition break.

Lead by the new high flyer Jan Matura, the Czech team was seventh with 827.1 points. A good result for Matura, Lukas Hlava, Roman Koudelka and Cestmir Kozisek. For the Russian team it was a success that they could qualify for the second round. Denis Kornilov, Ilja Rosliakov, Dimitry Vassiliev and Alexey Romashov were eighth.

The teams of Italy, Switzerland, Finland and South Korea failed to make the cut for the final round.
