Peter Prevc is in the best shape of his life. The Slovene jumped on great 221.5 m in the qualification for the ski flying in Oberstdorf and won the round with 212.0 points. The 19-year-old already showed the longest jump in training and is one of the top contestants for the victory on Saturday.
Under good conditions on the Heini-Klopfer-hill the second place went to Czech Roman Koudelka with 198.5 m and 199.3 points. Andreas Kofler of Austria finished third with a flight on 204.5 m (199.1 points) and showed that he also has to be reckoned with in ski flying. Also Norwegian Anders Fannemel and Russian Denis Kornilov, who were fourth and fifth, also landed far beyond the 200 m mark. Bjoern Einar Romoeren landed on 205 m and was seventh.
The start order is the reverse ranking of the ski flying World Cup. This means that other athletes were pre-qualified than in other World Cup competitions. For example Gregor Schlierenzauer and Richard Freitag had to qualify today. Schlierenzauer didn't have a good jump in the qualification, but made the cut. Freitag easily qualified.
The ski flying hill in Oberstdorf »
French Vincent Descombes Sevoie started with a lot of self-confidence. The 28-year-old was in the lead in Klingenthal before the competition there was cancelled. He took this good feeling with him to Oberstdorf, landed on exactly 200 m and was eleventh, right behind Tom Hilde. So he will be the only French in the competition.
Kranjec and Ammann in shape
Of the pre-qualified athletes Robert Kranjec showed a top jump with 220 m. The Slovene is a phenomenon in ski flying. The bigger the hill, the better is Kranjec. Also Simon Ammann of Switzerland had a great jump on 218.5 m. The 30-year-old is the defending champion at the ski flying World Championships in Vikersund and seems to get in a top shape now. Japanese Daiki Ito landed on 218 m - he is a fantastic ski flyer. Also Kamil Stoch of Poland showed what he is capable of with his 214.5 m.
Because only 40 jumpers qualify for the competition in ski flying, 25 athletes could not make the cut today and almost every team was effected. The Finns lost Matti Hautamaeki, a former ski flying world record holder. Only Anssi Koivuranta will represent Finland in the competition.
Hajek and Janda out - Morassi too
Also Jakub Janda and his teammate Antonin Hajek, known to be a good ski flyer, could not qualify. Andrea Morassi and Sebastian Colloredo will not be able to compete for Italy tomorrow. Also two Germans didn't have their best day: Felix Schoft and Maximilian Mechler failed to make the cut.
The spectacle will start on Saturday at 4:00 pm CET - of course live on FISskijumping.com
