The German skijumpers met in Italy to start their summer training. From May 25th to May 29th the masters of the hills tried their hand at a totally different field. Under professional guidance, among others also of Andreas Felder, former World Champion and record World Cup winner from Austria, the whole training group Ia climbed the mountains around Lake Garda.
Together with the coaches Werner Schuster, Rolf Schilli and Christian Winkler, the jumpers Martin Schmitt, Severin Freund, Michael Neumayer, Georg Späth, Michael Uhrmann, Pascal Bodmer, Tobias Bogner and Felix Schoft took the trip to Italy. For “Schorschi” Späth this was the first time with the team since his cruciate ligament rupture.
A lot was demanded from the jumpers A lot was demanded from the jumpers, they did not just go on a little hiking-tour in Italy. “That was real rock climbing, about six to seven pitches. They had to cope with a 5+ or 6-,” said DSV-spokesman Ralph Eder, who was at the Lake Garda himself for a couple of days.
After an introduction on the first day and learning to handle the rope and carabiner they went up to the “Sonnenplatten”, a popular area among rock climbers north of Arco at Lake Garda.
Training to deal with new situations The focus was not only on teambuilding, the rock climbing also had a training effect. “It was about adjusting to new situations. When you are 150 meters above the ground on a rock, you are in a different situation than on a hill”, said Eder.
Besides that, this was the first get together and training with the team for the new season, where there is a real highlight with the Olympic Games in Vancouver. “The atmosphere was good, it was a great camp. A lot of the jumpers also brought their bikes and went on a couple of little tours”, told Eder.
First jumps in Einsiedeln On Monday after the rock climbing tour, that lead the jumpers also on the fixed rope route Mori near Arco, the team travelled to Einsiedeln in Switzerland to do their first jumps of the season in the skijumping center there. “Einsiedeln is perfect, because there are hills of different sizes”, said Eder. “There you can decide individually where to jump.”
So the German jumpers had the honor to jump on the newly baptized Andreas-Küttel- and Simon-Ammann-hills.
