Kofler strong - Koch dominates training

Andreas Kofler was the best in the qualification for the individual competition on Friday and Saturday at the ski flying World Championships in Vikersund. On the world’s largest hill the Austrian showed a jump on 221 m for a total of 220.3 points.

Rune Velta was second with 221.5 m and 216.2 points. Velta was followed by his teammate Anders Fannemel (202.8 points). And with Bjoern Einar Romoeren as ninth, the Norwegians are in a good shape for the Championships in front of their home crowd. Anders Bardal was pre-qualified.

The longest flight in the qualification, that took place under sometimes stronger backwind, surprisingly showed French Vincent Descombes Sevoie with 222.5 m. The 28-year-old was already doing very well on the ski flying hill in Oberstdorf. Good jumps were also shown by Czech Jakub Janda and Finland’s Janne Happonen.

Ammann strong - Morgenstern and Koch skip quali

Simon Ammann was the only one of the pre-qualified athletes who could fly over the 200m-mark. But the best ten of the ski flying World Cup had no real chance under strong tailwind. Thomas Morgenstern and Martin Koch did not jump in the qualification. “The wind has a big influence here. It’s tough with tailwind”, Severin Freund said after his jump on 184 m.

Koch on 237 m in training

Martin Koch was by far the best in the training rounds. With 237 m the Austrian showed the longest jump of the day. Koch is the top favorite for Gold in Norway. The 30-year-old was the best in both training rounds, both times ahead of Robert Kranjec.

For German record holder Michael Neumayer, Austrian David Zauner and Norway’s Tom Hilde the day was already over after the training because at World Championships only fourth athletes can compete for each nation.

Dejan Judez did not make the Slovenian team, Stefan Hula could not qualify for the Polish team, With Antonin Hajek, a ski flying specialist was not nominated for the Czech and Alexander Sardyko could not qualify for the Russian team.

Famous names out in the qualification

Only nine jumpers could not qualify for the competition, among them also Jernej Damjan and Emmanuel Chedal. And also all four jumpers from Kazakhstan.
